Phl p 1 and Phl p 5b are proteins found in grass pollen and classified as group 1 and group 5 allergens, respectively.
Allergens in these grass pollen groups are glycosylated proteins that act as cross-reactive antigens in most grass and maize species.
The prevalence of both Phl p 1 and Phl p 5b is up to 90% among patients sensitised to grass pollen.
Symptoms associated with an allergy to this molecule mainly include allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and coughing caused an itchy throat; in some cases, the allergy may also cause skin symptoms and lead to bronchial asthma.
The assessment of sensitisation to Phl p 1 and Phl p 5b is considered important for selecting patients eligible for allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT).
