m229 - rAlt a 1 (Alternaria alternata)
Test details
This test is useful when a mould allergy is suspected and to identify the specific molecule that has previously caused a positive result in the associated allergen extract test.
Alt a 1 is a protein mainly found in the cell wall and cytoplasm of mature spores of the mould Alternaria.
The airborne concentration of Alt a 1 presents seasonal variations depending on the local climate, with levels peaking in the summer.
Cross-reactivity is possible almost exclusively with Alt a 1 homologues in phylogenetically related fungi of the Pleosporaceae family.
The prevalence of Alt a 1 is almost 50% among patients sensitised to Alternaria spores.
Symptoms associated with an allergy to this molecule mainly include allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and coughing caused an itchy throat; in some cases, the allergy may also cause skin symptoms and lead to bronchial asthma.
The assessment of sensitisation to Alt a 1 is considered important for selecting patients eligible for allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT).
