This test is useful when a pollen allergy is suspected and to identify the specific molecule that has previously caused a positive result in the associated allergen extract test.


Found in birch pollen, protein Bet v 1 belongs to the PR-10 protein family.
This molecule has a prevalence of up to 90% in patients sensitised to birch pollen.
Cross-reactivity is frequently observed both with other pollens — Car b 1 (hornbeam), Aln g 1 (alder), Cor a 1 (hazel), Que a 1 (oak), chestnut (Cas s 1), beech (Fag s 1) — and with foods — apple (Mal d 1), pear (Pyr c 1), strawberry (Fra a 1), cherry (Pru av 1), apricot (Pru ar 1), kiwi (Act d 8), peach (Pru p 1), carrot (Dau c 1), celery (Api g 1), soy (Gly m 4), hazelnut (Cor a 1), and peanut (Ara h 8).
Symptoms associated with an allergy to this molecule mainly include allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and coughing caused an itchy throat; in some cases, the allergy may also cause skin symptoms and lead to bronchial asthma.
The assessment of sensitisations to Bet v 1 is considered important for selecting patients eligible for allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT).
