Anti-Neuronal Antigen Antibodies
Test details
This assay detects human autoantibodies against neuronal antigens to aid the diagnosis of multiple neurological conditions. It is performed on tissue substrates, allowing identification of antibody reactivities to distinct components of nervous tissue.
In paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNS), antibody testing is recommended using at least two independent methods. For high-risk phenotypes, testing combines indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) on tissue and immunoblot; for intermediate- and low-risk phenotypes, testing combines IIF on tissue and cell-based assays (transfected cells).
Depending on the case, tissues used for IIF include cerebellum, hippocampus, intestine, and/or nerve. In addition, in-house immunohistochemistry (home-made tests) can be performed for further work-up.
