On November 19, 2025, the 39th National Congress of Pediatric Nephrology was held in Messina. The work of Dr. Benedetta Antoniello on the identification of urinary biomarkers of kidney transplant rejection, carried out in collaboration with Euroimmun Italy Laboratory, was awarded the Rizzoni Prize for best oral communication.
Within a project funded by the associations Il Sogno di Stefano and Fondazione IRP Città della Speranza, aimed at identifying non-invasive methods for monitoring pediatric kidney transplants, 117 urine samples from transplanted children followed at the Pediatric Nephrology Unit (UOC) of Padua were analyzed. The samples were collected in parallel with protocol biopsies performed at 6, 12, and 24 months after kidney transplantation.
Measurement of the chemokines CXCL10 and CXCL13 and the soluble protein CD163, and comparison with the histological diagnosis of rejection, showed that the concentrations of the analyzed molecules correlate with the occurrence of subclinical rejection, both cellular and antibody-mediated (creatinine-corrected data showed statistical significance of P: 0.0005, P: 0.047, and P: <0.0001, respectively).
These results suggest that urinary CXCL10, CXCL13, and soluble CD163 may be considered potential early, non-invasive biomarkers of subclinical rejection in pediatric kidney transplantation.
Congratulations to Dr. Antoniello and to the entire research team.
